April 22, 1970: Global warming warning on the first Earth Day
Published April 20, 2009 @ 06:00PM PT
Sure, the hippie hairdos are good for a chuckle.
But you may laugh to keep from crying: Nearly 40 years later, most of the arguments these Earth Day demonstrators made about caring for the environment are still in play -- including the "awesome Earth Day warning" from government climatologist Dr. J. Murray Mitchell (reported by the newscaster at the end of the video) about "a greenhouse effect" that "could melt the Arctic ice cap."
Dr. Mitchell, who had a 35-year career as a senior climate expert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (he died in 1990 at age 62) had been calling attention to human-propelled effects on the weather and the climate since the 1960's.

Hey, everyone... can't post media here. There is a new map of the Arctic by National Geographic (find a geek friend). Not on the site: but the article is about countries who want to stake claims in the Arctic for Oil and Gas...and the mapping mission they paid for...............ARCTIC LANDGRAB (As rising temperatures melt the polar ice cap, five countries race to map their claims to a new energy frontier. The stakes are huge. Nearly a quarter of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas may lie beneath the seabed of this vast wilderness.............ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/05/healy/funk-text
The new map shows the shrinkage of the ice mass just over the last 3 years!! and from l980. You can take a cruise this summer from Greenland to Nome, Alaska, across the Arctic Ocean..it will be so melted.
