Dear Representative,

We all recognise that climate change is a global challenge, and that it will require a global solution with commitments by all of us to change the way we live our lives.  Yet climate change is happening now, and unless decisive action is taken soon by political leaders, it will have devastating effects on people, species and habitats around the world.

Recalling the stated aim of European leaders to limit the rise in global temperatures to less than 2°C above the average recorded in pre-industrial times, I write to you to urge you to ensure that Europe contributes its fair share of the burden of addressing climate change.

As negotiations progress on the "EU climate and energy package" between European Council and European Parliament, with expert advice from the European Commission, the European institutions of which you are Presidents - the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission - have a unique opportunity to show international leadership. By agreeing a package that commits the EU to reductions in greenhouse gasses of at least 30% by 2020, with additional assistance for poorer countries, you will set the level of ambition for future international negotiations and help lead the world to long-term solutions to climate change.

European action against climate change will create at least 2.5 million sustainable jobs in Europe. It will also economise the taxpayer's money through energy efficiency measures. It will improve EU citizens' wellbeing as well as reducing health care costs because of the health benefits of climate protection.

But the greater opportunity - and one equally worthy of leadership - is to set Europe on course to a cleaner, low-carbon future by ensuring that the majority of this reduction is achieved within the borders of the EU. 

I call on you to do all you can to ensure that the European Union adopts a strong Climate and Energy Package which leads the world towards a cleaner, low-carbon future.
