Stop Uranium Mining In the Grand Canyon
Tell Your Rep to Support the Grand Canyon Watershed Protection Act
Dear [Decision Maker],
Before leaving office, the previous Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, ignored a mandate from Congress to withdraw mining claims to 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon. Uranium mining around the Grand Canyon and Colorado River could devastate tourism, which generates more than half a billion dollars for the economy, and would threaten the drinking water for 30 million people living in the western United States.
Please personalize your message
I urge you to work with the new Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar to permanently protect Grand Canyon from uranium mining; as well as use the power of your office to update the antiquated 1872 mining law, and pass the Grand Canyon Protection Act.

Update: Send a Message of Thanks!
July 20, 2009 - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that the agency will temporarily place 1 million acres of public lands surrounding the Grand Canyon off limits to new uranium mining claims, as well as exploration and development of existing, unpatented claims.
Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), has also introduced a bill, the Grand Canyon Watersheds Protection Act of 2009, which would offer permanent protection by banning exploration and new claims on roughly 1 million acres of public land bordering the Grand Canyon. Read the full press release.
Send a message of thanks to Secretary Salazar!

I am interested in this sunject. There is a strong movement against nuclear power. I heard that even Iran would not use nuclear power plants ecxept that they have no choice since they are sanctioned from any other means of energy thus survival.

PLEASE CHECK OUT DR. HELEN CALDICOTT, "Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer":
Nuclear Power does not pay for itself but must be subsidized by taxpayers. This means that taxpayers pay TWICE for electricity generated by Nuclear Power.
Uranium mining has a HUGE carbon footprint.
Nuclear Power plants also depend on DIRTY COAL.
It will be half a million years before we no longer suffer the consequences of Nuclear Radiation already in our environment as a result of Nuclear projects.
2 of 3 men will get cancer in their lifetimes as a result of radiation poisoning. The figures are lower for women but I have forgotten what they are.
There is only enough Uranium left to supply the world with NINE YEARS of Nuclear Power.
"It's a hell of a way to boil water." ~Albert Einstein
Mining anything destroys the environment.
Nuclear Power is a National Security risk: all a terrorist needs to do is bomb one nuclear power plant to wreak a catastrophe of atrocious proportions.
