Stop Global Warming

Eat less meat on Mondays (or any day)

Eating less meat can help stop global warming, or at least slow it down -- because globally, livestock farming is responsible for nearly 20% of the greenhouse gas pollution caused by human activities. That is a full FIFTH of anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

For omnivores accustomed to making meat the centerpiece of a meal, this might be a challenge. So let's pledge to eat less meat at least one day a week, and help each other figure out how to do it deliciously. I'll be blogging about it regularly on the Stop Global Warming blog, in a series called Less-Meat Mondays.

Have a great less-meat recipe that you'd like share with the world? Send me the info and a photo, or a link to where you're blogging it, at emily -AT- change -DOT- org.

  1. This is an ongoing pledge that should be fulfilled as often as possible between Oct 20, 2008 and Oct 25, 2010.

Start with "Eating less meat on Monay" is a good start.  I hope more people will switch to Vegetarian more quickly since we don't want to wait until NO RETRUN point to save our planet.  UN reported that animal factory generates more greenhouse gas than all cars/trunks in the world combined, so vegetarian is the most effective, cheapest and quickest way to find global warming.  Below are some cost of Meat Eating:
    Some Cost of Meat Eating:
Heart disease    Over 17 million lives lost globally each year.   Cost of cardiovascular disease is at least US $1 trillion a year.
Cancer   Over 1 million new colon cancer patients diagnosed each year.   More than 600,000 colon cancer-related mortalities annually.   In the United States alone, colon cancer treatment costs about US $6.5 billion.   Millions are newly diagnosed with other meat-related cancers every year.
Diabetes   246 million people are affected worldwide.   An estimated US $174 billion spent each year on treatment.
Obesity   Worldwide 1.6 billion adults are overweight with 400 million more who are obese.   Costs US $93 billion each year for medical expenses in the United States alone.   At least 2.6 million people die annually from problems related to being overweight or obese.
Environmental   Use up to 70% of clean water.   Pollute most of the water bodies.   Deforest the lungs of the earth.   Use up 90% of the world’s cereal.   Cause world hunger & wars.   80% cause of global warming. Plus more …

So change your life, change your heart, change your diet, to save out planet.

I have been a vegetarian for 11 years and have never been so healthy like now than before. It's time for the government to do something to inform and re-educate the people the right concept of healthy eating without meat consumption. Meat eating is more harmful to us than providing us nutrition. Besides, animals should have every right like us humans to live and die naturally.

Also vegan here so this isn't a challenge but I want to help anyone who needs it.  Eat less meat everyday! and less dairy, eggs, anything from animals.  Anyone needing meal ideas, I have a food blog which also links to many veggie food blogs.  There are tons of delicious options.

I usually will only eat meat with my dinner.  I snack on crackers, carrots, or whatever like that throughout my work days.  Sometimes I splurge, but mostly my relative poverty and overactive metabolism solve this one for me.  It didn't used to be like that, however, and I am much healthier now, in part because of the change in diet.  People, I think, are designed evolutionarily to spend a significant portion of their time in a state of hunger.  It's not a pleasant effect, but it makes sense if you think about the life of early natives and what motivated them.  Because this design has not caught up to our modern wealth, we as a society tend to overeat habitually.  So I think, contrary to intution maybe, it is healthy to go without a meal now and then.  The fab four and that damn pyramid sure aren't helping America any, that much I know for sure (not the beatles, they rock).

I put pasta sauce with mushrooms on soy-based "crumbles" that look like hamburger and have at least two different colored vegetables with them.  Who needs meat?  There are plenty of protein meatless substitutes!

About 1/2 our family's meals are vegetarian -- lasagna, pasta al fredo, veggie burgers, soup and grilled cheese.  My husband hunts so we have venison year-round and rarely buy meat.  We have chicken about once a week.  I'm looking forward to your blog for more vegetarian recipes.

Mondays are now meat-free at my house. Eating with less meat really isn't that hard at all. A vegetable stir-fry, meatless lasagna, or pasta with a meatless sauce are all great ideas for meat-free meals.
